SUNDAY MUST WATCH! Carte Blache

Rape Kit Shortage
Imagine reporting a case of rape to your nearest police station – you will be directed not to wash your body until evidence such as blood, sweat, hairs and semen can be collected with a rape kit. The quality of evidence can be the difference between justice and a rapist getting away with it. Despite staggering annual statistics on rape and sexual assault, it has become increasingly difficult for the dedicated officers of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Investigations Unit to access evidence collection kits. Carte Blanche investigates why 80% of police stations in the country have no rape kits available.

Cyberbullying
Derek Watts
It may have been designed with social connection in mind, but these days social media is less about friends, followers and sharing experiences. It has become a platform for cyberbullying, online harassment and trolling – and South Africans are some of the worst culprits. From celebrities to children – no one is immune because on the internet, perpetrators can remain anonymous, operating under the guise of pseudonyms while abusing innocent people from anywhere around the world – often with devastating real-life consequences. Carte Blanche peers into the dark side of social media.

Home Sales Conundrum
Fuelled by a poorly performing economy, political uncertainty and the need to downscale, investors in the luxury end of the South African private property market find their properties are sitting with for sale boards out for far too long and generally fetch lower prices than they bargained for – in some cases as much as 30% less. Carte Blanche examines why wealthy investors seem unable to realise the profit they had imagined when buying at the high end some years ago, while in the lower income segment of the market, opportunities abound for significant and growing returns on investment.
