Known for putting together spectacular special
performances, Afrikaans soapie 7de laan will on Friday 24 May 2019 broadcast a
special Africa Day episode, in celebration of Africa Day 25 May 2019.
Africa Day is celebrated in various countries
on the African continent, as well as around the world and this year 7de Laan
celebrated with an authentic South African insourced variety show featuring the
University of Johannesburg Choir, Friendly Drummers, Urban Pantsula’s and South
African favourite Dr. Victor.
“What better way to celebrate Africa Day than
with music and dance” says Thandi Ramathesele, Executive Producer of 7de Laan.
“We specifically chose these artists and groups because we believe they
represent so much of who we are as South Africans.”
For more than 40 years Dr. Victor has been
crafting and creating an uplifting up-tempo sound that has earned this singer,
musician, songwriter and producer an enviable reputation on the South African
music scene and abroad.
The UJ Choir has represented South Africa
around the world including in Austria, Germany, Belgium, and Netherlands, to
name a few. The choir’s travel and sound has earned them a number of awards and
achievements, among which is the 2015 Overall Grand Prix recognition at the
Slovakia Folk competition held in Bratislava.
The Urban Movers is a group of young talented
dancers from Alexandra who perform at local and corporate events and uses it as
an income method to sustain their families.
Established in 2012, Friendly Drummers is an
innovative marimba band that stretches the instruments' capabilities to create
fresh sound which is unique and contemporary, yet remains distinctly South
African.
“Africa Day is an important occasion in 7de
Laan’s annual calendar and we make it a point of celebrating it in new ways
every year in order to embrace Africa and its cultures and demonstrate our
diversity”, concludes Ramathesele.
The episode will be aired on 24 May 2019,
reaching millions of 7de Laan’s loyal viewers. Be sure to tune in at 18:00 on
SABC 2.
